The Park West High School on 50th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues has a large bas relief sculpture of the seal of the City of New York. The central motif of the seal is the coat of arms of the City.
The coat of arms shield has the four windmill sails that recall the city's history as the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. Beavers occupy the upper and lower spaces between the sails. Flour barrels occupy the left and right spaces. New York became a major port for trading and exporting. Beaver pelts were one of the most profitable exports. The flour barrels recall the Bolting Act of 1674 which gave the city a monopoly on the milling and export of flour.
To the left and right and holding the coat of arms are a colonists and a Lenape Native American. Over the shield is a bald eagle. At the bottom is the date, 1664, the year New Amsterdam became New York.
