Location of the legendary Edgar Thompson Steel Works. Founded by Andrew Carnegie and other partners, it employed the new Bessemer Process to remove impurities. The first heat was produced here in August 1875. The mill is still active to this day.

The ET Works has operated here from the 19th through the 21st centuries, producing basic steel and steel products such as beams and rails. The new Bessemer Process allowed for the production of inexpensive, high-quality steel. The location was chosen as it allowed for inexpensive transport of raw materials and finished goods.
This location is quite legendary. Here Genl Braddock, accompanied by George Washington, was mortally wounded while crossing the river en route to attack nearby Fort Duquesne, at the forks of the Ohio in Pittsburgh, during the French and Indian War. Also the location of a bloody strike by steelworkers in 1892.
My family is from this area. As a young child, I remember going home at night and seeing the whole sky light up red from the glow of the furnaces. My uncle told us it was a giant smoking a big cigar. I used to ride my bike home at night during my college summers, along a closed section of road running beside the plant-it was so spooky.
