Sitting atop a lotus pedestal, a massive 24 meter tall white statue of Gautama Buddha rests in meditative contemplation in western Nha Trang. Visible as you enter the city and from as far as Tran Phu Bridge, the figure was cast in 1964-1965 and placed where the Long Son Pagoda stood from 1886 to 1900, when a fierce typhoon destroyed it. Since 1900, the Long Son Pagoda sits at the foot of Trai Thuy hill.
Around the base of the statue are portrait photos of Buddhists, who died in the name of Buddism in 1963 in a movement against President Ngo Dinh Diem of the so-called “Saigon Regime”.
Buddha was born approximately 560 B.C. in Northern India. Through his life, Buddha gave the concept of Nirvana an unprecedented exposure to a large portion of the Eastern world with his achievement of and subsequent teachings about the state of enlightenment. As a religion, Buddhism contains the attainment of Buddhahood or Nirvana as a central precept of its teachings. Among the teachings of the Buddha to the world, the foremost was "Ahimsa" (not causing harm to anyone).
