The present castle is built on the site of an earlier type of castle. Castle Keep of about 1130 is of a round design instead of the more normal square, making it harder to penetrate if attacked, the walls added later. The Keep has been restored and the castle is open to visitors at various times, the site is looked after by English Heritage with a visitors centre at the car park entrance.
