“Renewing the Forest
Lightning ignited thick brush near Beaver Creek, just to the south. After smoldering undetected for four days, the fire flared up on August 30, 1985. The park allows natural fires to burn whenever possible, but suppressed this blaze when it threatened nearby buildings. Few structures burned, though flames did consume the Tack House across the pasture.
Lightning fires have charred these slopes again and again over the centuries, making fire a major natural factor within this ecosystem. Today countless young lodgepole seedlings flourish over the ridge where standing dead trees mark the burn. Gradually, a new forest rises from nutrient-rich ashes.”
