The Star of David set in stained glass above the arched double door denotes this eclectic structure as a Jewish synagogue. Built in 1901, Mt. Sinai Temple was western Iowa’s first worship center erected specifically as a Reformed Jewish temple. Victorian and Queen Ann architecture dominate the creamy clapboard building while the arched windows and front door reveal Gothic features; the Prairie style education wing was added in 1922. The octagonal tower holds no bell but is capped with a bell-shaped roof garnished with decorative wrought iron cresting. Most of the stained glass windows are original.

The parish flourished with the influx of Jewish immigrants in the 1920’s. Reformed Jews easily assimilated into the mainstream culture, and some characteristics of their worship center reflected that perspective: The Ark and Torah, traditional symbols of the more conservative congregations, were missing from the front.

When the Mt. Sinai congregation outgrew the facility in 1956, they moved and the building became home to the United Orthodox Synagogue. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
