The Israel Putnam School was completed in 1902. It is a 2 1/2 story hip-roofed brick building with Indiana limestone trim. It has a large rectangular center section with projecting side wings. The was an addition added in 1922. The school occupies a large corner lot, which borders commercial and residential areas.

The facade is dominated by five round-arched openings with the entrance being recessed. The entry features double doors each with a glass pane over a single large raised panel. Above the doors is a Classical cornice with a triglyphed frieze and triangular pediment.

This school was the Town of Putman's first modern brick school building. The 1902 annual report described the school as "an epoch in history of the town". It represented the fulfillmaent of early 20th centry educational ideals. The construction reflects the industrial and ethnic history of Putnam, which is the largest city in the northeast section of Connecticut. The area experienced a population increase, due mainly to the French-Canadian millworkers, which made the old school obsolete.
