Wat Mai Play Hoi is located in a rural region of the rural, central Thai province, of Phichit. A little off the beaten track, however, the Wat is undergoing an extensive refurbishment and is an impressive sight. Several of the small temple buildings are guarded, as are many Buddhist wats, by lions flanking the entrance.

These two lions are more European lion like in appearance, than most. They are gold in colour, and life-sized. The photographs do not convey this well, but they are well crafted, possessing a realist appearance—they look as if they really are lions, sitting there, waiting for a bad guy to come along.

If you visit, remember to make a small donation for your trouble, 20 baht will suffice.
