It is not uncommon for cairns to be placed at the entrance to a village or geographical region to mark boundaries, but also as a way to protect the area from evil spirits.
This cairn is a bit unusual in that it contains a time capsule. It was placed here on July 30, 1999, but there is no apparent date that it is to be opened. The cairn appears to be about 15 feet (5 m) in height, and about 6 feet (2m) in diameter. It is composed of natural rocks of volcanic origin which are common in the valley. It is located beside a 200 year-old zelkova tree, and a granite dolmen is laying horizontally in front of it. It was presented by a temple.
