"The Bern Rathaus (Town Hall) is the historic town hall of Berne and is still the political heart of the city and canton of Bern.
Here gathered the Great Council of the Canton of Bern to five annual sessions. When the Parliament is in session the Bern City Hall flag is hoisted on the roof of the building.
The Town Hall is also the seat of the cantonal government. The members of the Governing Council attend every Wednesday in the government room for its regular meetings.
Every Thursday in the Grand Council Chamber meets the legislative branch of the city of Bern, the Bern city council. The Synod, the parliament of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Berne also attend here regularly.
The building was constructed from 1406 to 1415 in late Gothic style under Henry of Gengenbach and Hans Hetzel direction.
From 1865 to 1868, a neo-gothic renovation was under Frederick Salvisberg. Another renovation, designed by Martin Risch between 1940 to 1942 gave the building it´s present shape. "
(Adapted from wikipedia)
"In its long existence it has survived the Burgundian Wars, Reformation and Revolution. Today it is the seat of the cantonal government, where the Bernese Cantonal Council convenes five times a year. Sessions of the cantonal governing bodies are never open to the public."
