Soeiro da Costa´s Coat of arms is the cost of arms of the Costa family and it´s composed by six bones probably representing the ribs in the back (Costa is Portuguese for back).
The coat of arms is placed in a magestic fountain in Belem (Fonte Luminosa)in front of Jerónimos Monastery together with 49 other coat of arms of important personalities from the time of Portuguese Discoveries. The fountain was designed by Cottinelli Telmo and built in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition. There´s very little information about the fountain and the Coat of Arms and most available information refers to a total of 32 Coat of arms of Portuguese inland and Overseas provinces wich is wrong. These coat of arms can be seen in the gardens around the fountain designed with flowers and bushes.

Soeiro da Costa (Lagos, Algarve, c. 1390 - 1472),was a Portuguese navigator and of the Twelve of England.

There is no proof of his parentage, but was, according to historians, the son or grandson of Alfonso Lopes da Costa, who is certified in Lagos in 1401.

It was thus a gentry, the old nobility without titles. His ancestors were alcalde-mor of Évora, on the thirteenth century and fourteenth century, and then small farmers in the Algarve.

Soeiro da Costa is one of the heroes of the episode narrated in the Epic Poem "Os Lusíadas" by Cacmões (Camoens), and known as the saga of the Twelve of England (Os Doze de Inglaterra).
The legend is as follows:

It is said that,twelve English ladies of the highest nobility have been offended in his honor by twelve nobles of the land. They called to his king to appoint champions to fight for their honor, but no champion were found in England .

The King remembered that the Portuguese beat themselves with bravery and fearlessness, and called for riders to come from Portugal to fight for the ladies offended. Twelve pORTUGUESE riders faced the twelve British offenders, and beat them, washing the honor of English ladies.
These twelve knights were real historic figures and are known since then as the Twelve of England.
Those twelve kinghts (thirteen in fact) were:
D. Álvaro Vaz de Almada (later count of Avranches);
Álvaro Gonçalves Coutinho, aka “o grão Magriço”;
João Fernandes Pacheco;
Lopo Fernandes Pacheco (Father of Diogo Lopes Pacheco, one of the assassins of D. Inês de Castro);
Álvaro Mendes Cerveira;
Rui Mendes Cerveira, brother of the above;
João Pereira Agostim;
Soeiro da Costa;
Luís Gonçalves Malafaia;
Martim Lopes de Azevedo;
Pedro Homem da Costa;
Rui Gomes da Silva;
Vasco Anes da Costa, aka “Corte Real”.
