Castillo de San Cristóbal is the largest European fortification in the New World. A major fortification built by the Spanish to fortify the entrance to San Juan Harbor, it is situated on the north east corner of Old San Juan and is part of the National Park Service San Juan National Historic Site.
Castillo de San Cristóbal was designed by Thomas O'Daly, the an Irish-born Chief Engineer who was working in the service of Spain against the British. The fortification was built to protect the El Morro fortress on the north west end of Old San Juan as well as to protect San Juan from an attack by land after the British in 1598 and the Dutch in 1625 launched unsuccessful attacks.
