The street was originally built in 1862 as a result of an treaty between Switzerland and Germany (Grand-Duchy of Baden) to be used as a customs free connection between the German cities Lörrach and Weil. As the population grew the street that was in the fields before became located in the residential area of Riehen. So the street became a normal border crossing with a customs station.
Since the Schengen treaty the customs stations are usually unmanned. A new customs free road is currently in progress close to this location.
