As the state was settled it became necessary to connect one settlement to another. Early attempts were made but it wasn't until the 1850s that the first military roads were built. Of the original 560 miles if military roads, only a small portion are still in use as county and township roads. The original 5 roads though formed the framework of the statewide network of roads that followed.
