In 1927, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in downtown San Jose was becoming overcrowded. A butcher shop was purchased and remodeled in the Willow Glen area south of downtown. Soon this little church school also became overcrowded. In 1946, a larger property at Pine and Newport was purchased with plans to build a chapel. The Saint Francis Episcopal Church of the Diocese of California was officially founded on December 31, 1948. In June, 1949, the Frances Schallenberger Memorial Chapel opened. A new parish hall was opened on October 31, 1954. Groundbreaking for today's church building was held on June 1, 1957 and the first services occurred in the current building on Mar 23, 1958.
