The pillory of Idanha-a-Velha represents the old municipal authority of the village, nowadays nearly depopulated, but also the last great effort of the Portuguese monarchs, in effecting the settlement of the locality.

The pillory is there, as a symbol of those real attempts to populate the city. An octagonal shaft, relatively slender, rests on a circular platform of three steps, and is crowned by a capital round, of some artistic and visual impact, decorated with the typical elements of the reign of D. Manuel: the armillary sphere, the royal arms and the Cross of Christ.

From the original decorative project of this pillory, were also part other elements, that the extreme dirt and natural detrition, caused by the erosion of time, make it impossible today to read.
