King Chulalongkorn (b. 1853-d. 1910), also known as King Rama 5 (reigned: 1868-1910), is one of the great kings of Thailand, and fondly remembered by his people. He is known for resisting the nefarious imperial ambitions of both Britain and France, modernising his country, and reforming the governmental administration. Statues of him are to be seen throughout Thailand, and invariably at the front of provincial administration buildings (Provincial Halls).
Uncharacteristically, this statue of the King is not located before the provincial hall, rather elsewhere in the capital of the province. The reason for this is that the normal place of the King has been assumed by a statue of a locally born and famous general Phraya Phichai. Thus, this is the only Thai province I have seen which does not have a statue of King Chula in its Provincial Hall.
This statue is both the most impressive of the King I have seen, and the worst photograph of the King I have ever taken. The sun was near overhead and behind the statue when I visited. Thus there is little detail.
Here the King (possibly in recompense for displacing him from his normal place of honour?), stands on a tall plinth, ~5m, on a dais, next to the Nan River, at the southern end of a large, public open area. I would surmise that this location is used for some public, ceremonial events.
The statue also seems taller than life-sized, maybe twice life-sized. It was difficult to estimate both for the height and the nearby sun. He wears military dress, his left hand rests on his sword, while his right is holding a scroll or a riding-crop of some type.
