Built between 1864 and 1867, the Tu Duc Royal Tomb is one of several Royal Tombs in the outskirts of Hue, the former Imperial Capital.

Emperor Tu Ðuc was the fourth emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam and reigned from 1848–1883. Although he had over a hundred wives and concubines, he was unable to father a son. Thus, it fell to him to write his own epitaph on the deeds of his reign.

This elephant is a component of the emperor honor guard of horses, elephants and mandarins in the burial area.
