As you enter Enid from the east of Highway 64, this Welcome sign informs you that Enid is the Hometown of Oklahoma Lt. Governor, Todd Lamb.
This is a wooden sign approximately ten feet wide and over six feet high. It is rectangular with rounded edges and painted brown and tan, with large letters E-N-I-D. The wood is carved with a horse and rider in full gallop.
Enid is the County Seat of Garfield County, located ninety miles north of Oklahoma City. The town was established on September 16, 1893 with the opening of the Cherokee Outlet. By nightfall, the town had a population of 10,000 folks. In 2010 its population stood at 49,379.
Originally named Skeleton Station by the railroad, it was later renamed Enid, after a character in Alfred Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Enid is a railroad hub and wheat production has always been a mainstay of the town. In 1916, oil was discovered nearby, and the town flourished even more. Today, Enid is the Wheat Capital of Oklahoma and the U.S., and is the third largest grain storage location in the world.
