"Die Rosenheimer Stadtpfarrkirche St. Nikolaus wurde nach mehrjähriger Renovierung am 10. Dezember 2006 von Erzbischof Kardinal Friedrich Wetter wiedereröffnet. Der 65 Meter hohe Turm ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt Rosenheim. Die Kirche ist das Heim der katholischen Gemeinde St. Nikolaus, Rosenheim. "Vermutlich war die erste Rosenheimer Kirche ein romanischer Bau. Das Patrozinium des heiligen Nikolaus hängt mit der Innschifffahrt zusammen, deren Schutzheiliger er war. Bis 1603 war Rosenheim eine Filiale der Pfarrei Pfaffenhofen, erst dann wurde es selbstständige Pfarrei.
An die Stelle der ersten Nikolauskirche trat in der 2. Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts ein spätgotischer Bau, vermutlich als Folge des Stadtbrandes von 1469. Der Turm trug damals einen gotischen Spitzhelm.
Beim großen Stadtbrand am 3. Mai 1641 brannte die Kirche bis auf die Mauern aus, auch stürzte das Chorgewölbe ein. Im Zuge der Wiederherstellung wurde die Kirche im Stil der Zeit mit reichen Stukkaturen versehen. Der Turm erhielt die heutige charakteristische Form. Die Beschaffung der neuen Einrichtung zog sich lange hin. Seit dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde die Kirche im klassizistischen Stil neu eingerichtet. Wegen des erheblichen Bevölkerungszuwachses wurde eine Erweiterung der Kirche notwendig, die 1880/81 erfolgte. Der alte Chor wurde abgebrochen und das Langhaus um drei Joche nach Osten verlängert. Der neue Chor mit der Sakristei entsprach in seiner Anlage dem alten. 1950 musste der Turm wegen Baufälligkeit abgetragen werden. Er wurde in der ursprünglichen Form unter Erhöhung um 2 Meter wieder aufgebaut und ist heute über 63 m hoch. 1963 erfolgte eine durchgreifende Innenrenovierung unter Beseitigung der neugotischen Ausstattung." The parish church of Rosenheim St. Nikolaus was re-opened on the 10th of december after several years of renovation by Archbishop Cardinal Friedrich Wetter. The 213ft high tower is the landmark of the city Rosenheim. The church is the home of the Catholic community of Rosenheim. The church is located between the Ludwigsplatz and the Max-Joseph-Platz in the center of the historic old town. wikipedia
The first church of Rosenheim was probably a romanesque building. The patronal St. Nikolaus is associated with the river Inn, whose patron saint Nikolaus was. Until 1603 Rosenheim was a branch of the parish Oberpfaffenhofen until it became an independent parish.
The place of the first church was taken from St. Nikolaus in the 2nd half of the 15th century. It was a late Gothic building, probably as a consequence of the great fire of 1469. The tower was then a Gothic spire.
The huge blaze on 3 May 1641 burnt the church up on the walls, also collapsed in the chancel arch. During the restoration, the church in the style of the day was provided with rich stucco. The tower acquired its characteristic shape. The procurement of new equipment took a long time. Since the end of the 18th Century the church was redecorated in the Neoclassical style. Due to the substantial increase in population an expansion of the church was necessary in 1880/81. The old choir was canceled and extend the nave by three bays to the east. The new choir vestry met with its investment in the old. In 1950 the tower had to be demolished due to disrepair. It was rebuilt in its original form with an increase by 6,5ft and it is still over 231ft high. In 1963, a thorough interior renovation was done with removal of the neo-Gothic features. (
