A "Stoney Groove" is a trickle, which runs in a carst-region.
It can elevate more than 5 m over the surrounding ground. "Stoney Grooves" are rare Geotopes, which are found only 12 times in Bavaria.
"Stone Grooves" are built by the dposition of chalk from slowly running trickles. Therefore carbonate-rich water has to emerge from a spring and run down a gently hill. There the spring-water releases a part of the dissolved carbondioxide. Then the dissolved calciumhydrogencarbonate converts to chalc (calciumcarbonate) which is insoluble:
Ca(HCO3)2 --> CO2 + H2O + CaCO3
The chalk is primarily deposited on the edges of the groove aand therefore forms the "Stoney Groove". In the colder water in the middle of the groove the deposition-process is slower, so that the groove remains. As the deposition continues, "Stoney Grooves" can grow 1-2 cm a year.
