Dr. Tichenor is mainly known for the mouthwash and topical antiseptic which bears his name. He was also, however a assistant surgeon in the Confederate States army who introduced antiseptic surgery while serving.
He himself was badly wounded, and facing the possible amputation of his own leg, insisted on treating his wounds with an alcohol-based solution of his own devising.
In later life, he served as a general and commander of the Louisiana division of the United Confederate Veterans.
