Die durch Kiesabbau entstandene "Northeimer Seenplatte" erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von etwa 360 ha und besteht zur Zeit aus 12 künstlichen Seen. Mindestens drei weitere werden noch hinzukommen. Die Förderung des Kieses kann man sich in der nahen Umgebung genau anschauen.
Die Seen liegen zentral zwischen Solling und Harz im sogenannten Leinegraben und sind im Durchzugsgebiet von Wasservogelarten, die von Nordeuropa und Westeurasien über das nördliche Mitteleuropa hinweg bis nach Südwesteuropa ziehen.
Neben den wasserliebenden Zugvögeln kann man hier auch heimische Vogelarten beobachten: Haubentaucher, Mäusebussard, Turmfalke, Wasserralle, Flussregenpfeifer, Turteltaube, Eisvogel, Uferschwalbe, Schafstelze, Wiesenpieper, Teichrohrsänger, Dorngrasmücke und Braunkehlchen, um nur ein paar zu nennen.
Ein 80 Hektar großer Teil der Northeimer Seenplatte ist als Naturschutzgebiet ausgewiesen. Freizeitaktivitäten in unmittelbarer Nähe wirken sich störend für die Vögel aus, und sind daher von vier Seen ausgeschlossen.
Am Wasser- und Uferbereich ehemaliger Abbaustellen haben sich neben Vögeln auch Amphibien und Libellen angesiedelt.

The Lake area of Northeim resulted from gravel quarrying and extends over a surface of approximately 360 hectar. There are at the moment 12 artificial lakes. At least three further lakes are planned.
The quarries are nearby and the work can be observed there.
The lakes are in the middle between the mountain areas of Solling and Harz and provide food and shelter for migratory bird, especially waterfowl, who migrate from the North of Europe and Western Eurasia through Central Europe to Southwest Europe.
Apart from migrating birds in autumn and spring there is quite a number of endemic birds and summer visitors to be observed, such as Great Crested Grebe, Common Buzzard, Common Kestrel, Water Rail, Little Ringed Plover, European Turtle Dove, Kingfisher, Sand Martin, Yellow Wagtail, Meadow Pitpit, Eurasian Reed Warbler, Common Whitethroat and Whinchat.
An 80 hectar area of the lakes is a nature reserve. Sports activities in close proximity are disturbing the birds, so four lakes are specially protected.
In the water and at the waters edge of the former quarries a multitude of amphibians and insects found a habitat for themselfes, they can also be observed here.
