This Burr Oak has been used over the years as a dominating landmark over the Illinois prairie.

According to the Bureau County Government's website, the Witness Tree is located along what was once an old Indian trail, and used by Potawatomi Chief Shabbona to hold council with Sauk and Fox tribal members.

More recently, the tree received its name from early railroad surveyors as a primary reference point or "witness," according to the Bureau County Tourism's website.
