Edmund Sixtus Muskie was born on March 28, 1914 in Rumford, Maine. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Following the war Muskie became active in politics, serving in the Maine House of Representatives before being elected Governor in 1954. Muskie also represented the people of Maine in the United States Senate from 1959-1980. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter selected Senator Muskie to be Secretary of State, serving in that office thru 1981. In 1987, Muskie served a as member of the Tower Commission, which investigated President Ronald Reagan’s involvement in the Iran-Contra Affair. Muskie retired from public service in 1988 and lived out his remaining years in Washington, D. C. Edmund Muskie die in Washington, D. C. on March 26, 1996 and is resting in Arlington National Cemetery.

Edmund S. Muskie was born in Rumford, Maine on March 28, 1914. He attended Bates College, majoring in history and government and upon graduation enrolled in Cornell Law School, graduating in 1939. Muskie served in the United States Navy during World War II, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. Following the War, her practiced law in Waterville, Maine where he was active in the Democratic serving in the Maine House of Representatives before being elected Governor in 1954; serving from 1954 – 1958. Following his term as Governor, Muskie was elected to the United States Senate in1958 and assumed his seat in the upper body in January 1959. Muskie served in the Senate from 1959 thru 1980 when he resigned to serve as Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter from 1980 thru 1981. Edmund Muskie was twice a candidate for national office; the first time he was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 1968 and was later a candidate for the party’s Presidential nomination in 1972. Following his service as Secretary of State Muskie retire to his home in Washington D.C. where he worked a lawyer and server on the “Tower Commission,” which investigated President Ronald Reagan involvement in the “Iran-Contra Affair.” Edmund Muskie retired from public service in 1988 and continued to live in Washington, D.C., where he died of congestive heart failure on March 26, 1996. Edmund Muskie is resting in Section 6 of Arlington National Cemetery.
