This is a really scary Queen. It is a wonder that the Romans stayed!

This is another of those names who's pronunciation has changed over the years.

Boudica or Boadicea led an uprising against the Romans after the death of her husband Prasutagus King of the Iceni. He had stipulated in his will that his Kingdom should be left jointly to his daughters and the Emperor of Rome. However, his lands were simply annexed by Rome and demanded that his debt was repaid. In making an example of the Iceni, Boudica was flogged and her daughters 'chastity was compromised'.

In the ensuing uprising Boudica's army razed Colchester, London and St Albans. She died in AD61 either as a result of illness or by poisoning herself and her daughters - supposedly in Epping Forest. It is not known for sure how old she was but it is likely that when she died, she was little more than 30 but has become an enduring British symbol.
