In Dedham, at a place where a portion of the Charles River flows out to a canal, is a place where trees have been allowed to grow on the small levee. On the north bank, is an iron fence, where a moderate-sized tree is interweaved with the horizontal railing, and mostly swallowed up both railings - in opposite directions.

It is difficult to determine the tree type with the leaves off. The bark is rougher than young maples, so I'm leaning toward an ash tree. However, I think it is hoping to be an ironwood.

To see the tree, there is a turnout on the southbound side of the Providence Highway, just south of a traffic light intersection where there is an Uno's Restaurant at the corner. The tree is on the other bank from this turnout.

A little history - The large body of water upstream of the gate is the Charles River. The body of water below the gate is known as Mother Brook. In 1639-1640, a canal was dug from here at the Charles to the original head of the Mother Brook, about 3/4 of a mile away. This was to provide more water to power mills. Today, this gate is part of flood control for the Charles River, maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and witness posts indicate that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is involved, as well.

But you came to see the tree!
Type of Tree: Probably an ash
