"The circular column or 'Lantern' encompasses internal LED lighting and stands 6m high, the Lantern is cast in panels of an optically clear resin with a carved interior relief surface and a smooth exterior surface, and is atop a granite honed and polished plinth in turn standing on a circular symmetrical patern mosaic.

The concept derived from the history of Blackwood and relevance of mining and coal to the development of the town. The Artist has explored the notion of a miner's lantern and the fundamental part coal has played in Blackwood's development. As a starting point for the research the Artist looked at the physical properties of coal and in particular the common link to all elements, Carbon. The imagery upon the resin panels that make up the 'Strata' in 'The Lantern' represents 6 different layers of the earths make-up; geo-sphere, paleontology, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and ending with technology.

The piece is another sculpture funded by means of a grant from the Arts Council of Wales."
