"The National Rope Factory (Cordoaria Nacional) former Royal Rope Factory of Junqueira, Lisbon is a national monument dated from 1779.
It manufactured cables, sisal ropes, sails and flags for the Portuguese ships.
The Cordoaria is located on Avenue of India, near the Belém area and its facilities extend for almost four hundred meters to a width of only about fifty meters along the river.
These dimensions were characteristics to the needs of the production process. Its location on the river also facilitate the supply of products to vessel owners.
Today, the building no longer produces ropes (since 1998), but, it´s open to the public housing several exhibitions throughout the year such as the Antiques Biennial exhibition which includes carpet, furniture, paintings, porcelain and so on." (From Wikipedia (

In the future it´s planned that the "Cordoaria Nacional" building will host the National Archeology Museum. Works were expected to begin in 2011 but due to the current situation of the country they will be postponed to a new date. Untill then it´s expected that the "Cordoaria" building will continue to host temporary exhibitions.
