The plaque reads, "The building was built by Mr. Smith in 1924 as the first marine hardware store in Orange County. Mr Curtis Herberts Sr. purchased the property in 1941 and donated the premises to the U.S.O. for the duration of World War !!. The northern half of the building was leased to the Pizza Pete's Cafe in 1946 and has kept the same name through three different owners, all of whom were named Pete."
