It is assumed that the building (or rebuilding) of Castle of Arouce dates back to 1080, when the village was peacefully occupied by Count Sesnando Davides, who had conquered Coimbra from the Moors in 1064, bringing the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula to the region Serra da Estrela and Lousã.

The castle was later conquered by the Moors during the offensive of 1124, and was reoccupied and repaired by D. Teresa de Leão.

Sometime in the fourteenth century, was built the Keep of the castle. Under the reign of King D. Manuel I (1495-1521), the village of Lousã received a new charter (1513), the time from which the medieval castle became known as Castle of Lousã.

Is was declaed as National Monument on June 23, 1910.
