Thay Pagoda was founded in the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong (1072–1127) and is an unusually large complex facing a picturesque lake. It is dedicated to the cult of Tu Dao Hanh in his three incarnations as monk (the Master), Buddha and king.
King Ly Than Tong (ruling from 1128 to 1138) was the son of king Ly Nhan Tong. According to the legend, the monk Tu Dao Hanh was reincarnated first as a Buddha and then as the king Ly Than Tong in answer to king Ly Nhan Tong‘s prayers for an heir.
On a separate altar, inside the pagoda dedicated to the monk Tu Dao Hanh, stands the lacquered statue of king Ly Than Tong dressed in a long yellow gown and wearing a red hat. He is accompanied by two kneeling figures which are said to be Cambodian slaves. The statue of the king is about 7 feet tall.
