Hal Taylor Memorial - Riverton, NJ

Hal Taylor used to live out here in the backwoods until his death in 2001. The preserve, road leading to the preserve and lord knows what else are named after him. He is even part of a puzzle cache, the highest honor one might posthumously earn.

This might be the hardest citizen memorial you might never find. First, you will have to go down a weird, dirt back road, passing by some really old farm houses, fields and other backwater town stuff. Turn off the main drag called River Road at N 40° 1.544 W 74° 59.094. Drive north, northwest on Taylor Road .44 miles until the road bends to the left or west, continue down another tenth of a miles (this is where the road gets a little dicey and is now dirt). There will be a dirt area to park on your left located at N 40° 1.748 W 74° 59.523. Get out, lock it up and walk down the dirt path into the Taylor Preserve until you get to the memorial and a benchmark which are approximately .25 miles away as the crow flies. Both are 3 or so inches from the path. The area is heavily wooded but I got real lucky and hit coordinates with 30 foot accuracy so I am highly confident at my posted coordinates.
The marker reads:
Hal Taylor (1939 - 2001) Would Ask You "Where will the sun meet the horizon today" Dedicated June 2004 By the Friends of Taylor WIldlife Preserve. There is also a spherical representation of the sky and the times for sunset at the two solstices.
The Wildlife Preserve was created in 1975 when 31 members of the Taylor family, Hal Taylor among them, gave a conservation easement on 86 acres of their land to the New Jersey Naturals Lands Trust. The property remains in Taylor ownership to "use and maintain the easement premises for open space and conservation purposes".
