"Francis Liardet entered the Royal Navy aged 12 in 1809, made Commander in 1838 and Post Rank in 1840. He was the NZ Land Company agent in New Plymouth, coming out in 1841 on the Whitby (a survey ship) where he landed at Wellington, before heading on to New Pymouth on The Regina. He was only here for 2 months before a serious injury saw him return to the UK. He met his future wife, the widow MrsCaroline Gregory (nee Filmer) on board ship. They had 2 children: Francis Fanny and Emily Liardet.
He became one of the Captains of Greenwich Naval Hospital in 1856, and wrote several books on seamanship.
He died aged 65. His bust stands in the Hall at Greenwich Hospital, next to that of Lord Nelson. Caroline died 3 years later in 1868, Francis the eldest son died aged 24 in 1870."
