Uzhgorod National University Physics Faculty
During the second half of the 17th century many Greeks, most of them wool traders from Tokay, Hungary, migrated to Uzhgorod. They built a wooden Greek Orthodox Church on this site.
In 1900 the Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Mukachave purchased the church and site. In 1906 a decision was made to build a monastery on the site. The 5-story building, the tallest building in Uzhgorod at that time, was completed in 1912 and christened St. Basil’s Greek-Catholic Monastery. American immigrants who were from Transcarpathia donated the funds. The monastery closed in 1937 and the building was converted into a gymnasium (high school) where students were taught in the Ukrainian language.
After World War II the region was annexed as part of Soviet Ukraine and the gymnasium was given to the newly formed Uzhgorod National University in 1945 where today it serves as the Physics Faculty.
A Zoological Museum (taxidermy) opened in 1946 is housed in three of the rooms of the Physics Faculty. The exhibits number over 5500 dead species and include the A. Hrabar collection of birds of prey, one of the richest in Ukraine. Other exotic animals on display include a dolphin, tiger, orangutan, gibbon, monkey, ostrich, emu, crocodile, zebra, python, cobra, sea snake, leopard, saiga antelope, shark, electric ray, squid and octopus.
