Home of Ivan Olbracht (Uzhgorod)
Olbracht was heavily influenced by the writings of his father Antal Stasek who was probably the first Czech writer who wrote on the themes of socialism and social justice.
Born in 1882, Olbracht studied law and philosophy in Prague and Berlin. In 1905 he was the editor of a socialist-democratic newspaper in Vienna called Historical Papers. He later did the same for The People’s Right in Prague. In 1921 he formally joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and began working as a journalist for the official Party newspaper. He was imprisoned twice for his radical political activity (1926 & 1928).
Olbracht wrote many stories throughout his life about legends and people of Transcarpatia. One of his most famous was “Nicola Suhaj” about the true-life Robin-Hood hero of the Carpathian Mountains.
