Pensa-se que foi neste local, que inicialmente se instalaram os primeiros monges, enquanto se construia o Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça. A Igreja da Conceição foi conhecida como igreja de santa maria a velha. Foi reedificada em 1648. Todo este espaço fazia parte do interior da 1ª cerca do Mosteiro de Alcobaça.
