At the entrance of Island Life at the Oklahoma City Zoo is this life-size bronze sculpture of a tortoise. It is standing in a mulched area by the pathway. There are no restrictions on touching and enjoying the sculpture, and children can often be seen riding it.
This cast bronze sculpture depicts "Espanola #21," an Espanola tortoise that lived in the San Diego Zoo for almost fifty years before being returned to its native Galapagos island home in 1971. The tortoise is depicted on the move, with his head outstretched. He stands about three feet tall and is about four feet long. Live tortoises just like him can be seen inside the exhibit area.
On the base of the sculpture, an inscription reads: Eric Berg/Argos/1992 4/5 Signed
A small bronze plaque mounted to a native stone sits in the mulched area and reads:
SADDLEBACKED
GALAPAGOS TORTOISE
