This two story brick building was designed by architects Richards and Abra and built in 1926-7. It is the fifth Market building to have been built in this area, four of them, including this one, on the same site. The 2nd built in 1948, 3rd in 1864 and 4th in 1876, all burnt to the ground. The first one was constructed in 1826-7 after Lieutenant-Colonel By used revenue from property rents to build a market building on George Street.
Today, the market area still retains much of the flavour of its past. Since the 1840s, the Byward Market has served as one of the principal hubs of commerce, entertainment and leisure activities in a locale that has been transformed from a remote colonial outpost to the centre of Canada's National Capital Region.
