This chimney rises from the ground to a height of about ten metres (thirty three feet). There is no indication what it is for. It is bolted together in sections and would appear to be made from iron. It is of a small diameter, about 30cm (one foot) and does not taper. The top has an elaborate decorative finish and the bottom section, just above ground level, is also ornate. There is no indication that anything was attached to it above ground.

The fancy work on the chimney may point to it being Victorian as the style of the day was to embellish everything. So, what did the Victorians do around here? The most well known about underground work was Brunel building a tunnel to pass under the Thames. Maps of where the stations are today do not pass under here when connected by a straight line but, is is possible, that the tunnel did pass under here and that the chimney was used for ventilation. It is too narrow for natural ventilation so there may have been some bellows underground to draw fresh air in or to exhaust foul air to the atmosphere.

Any other theories, by visitors, are most welcome!
