The CIBC was formed by the merger of two chartered banks in Canadian history that happened on June 1, 1961. The two banks, the Canadian Bank of Commerce (established 1867) and the Imperial Bank of Canada (established 1875) merged to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). This bank has been in the community for over 100 years starting in a tent and growing with the community ever since.

The town's website describes the mural as:

"The CIBC has been a focal point for Trade and Commerce in Stony Plain for over 100 years. CIBC began serving clients out of a tent in 1906. Over time, the needs of customers grew from fur and gold exchange to financial advice, convenience and service. This mural depicts the evolution of banking in our community and highlights some of the more prominent faces of the Stony Plain CIBC."
