In Boston's Back Bay section, Leif Eriksson (there are several spellings used, such as Ericson), a world-known Viking explorer who found the 'Vinland' somewhere on North America, is honored here along the Commonwealth Avenue Mall with this statue. He is also honored in the heavens by having his name identified with a crater on Mars.
At one time, there was a theory presented that Leif Eriksson (coincidentally, son of Erik the Red) discovered 'Vinland' along the Massachusetts coast, sailed up the Charles River and landed about two miles from this location and established a fort and settlement, Norumbega. While the theory is no longer seriously considered, the statue remains.
Ejriksson Crater is a 49 km wide feature in the southern hemisphere of Mars at 19.4°S 173.9°W. The crater name was approved in 1967.
If Leif Eriksson were alive and positioned like the statue looking off to the night sky at Mars, maybe he would say, "You can see my crater from here!"
