The Caramujo Factory was built in 1872 and a few years later, in 1889, a body was added to the previous set of four floors built in the 70s. In June 10, 1897, the factory suffered a devastating fire that destroyed almost completely.
The owner, confronted with the fragility of the previous building, sponsored a new building, so that such a disaster could not be repeated again.
The project took only one year, being completed in the summer of 1898, and the result was the first building fully structured in concrete and executed in Portugal.
The last major phase of works occurred in 1960 when a constructive part in the scheme of 1898 was sacrificed in favor of modernization, whose main element was the inclusion of the silos addorsed to the building.
The decline, however, arrived shortly after, which led to the stoppage of work and the beginning of a relatively long process of decay.
In 2002, the Municipality of Almada acquired the property to the Sociedade Industrial Aliança, which meant the first step for the maintenance of the monument as a mark of the impact that industrialization had on the region and as a symbol of the constructive process - the concrete - which met much success in the twentieth century.
The building in considered an "Imóvel de Interesse Público / Public Interest Building" by the IGESPAR.
