It was built between 1900 and 1906 to house the French Governor-General of Indochina. It is a thoroughly French Beaux-Arts building.
In 1954, when Vietnam achieved independence, Ho Chi Minh refused to live in the palace for symbolic reasons, although he still received state guests there. From 1954 to 1958 he lived into the palace electrician's former quarters behind the building and in 1958 he moved in a traditional Vietnamese stilt house built on the grounds of the palace.

The day we visited the Presidential Palace Complex there was a Canadian delegation at the palace which explains the presence of our Canadian flag on the second picture. Unfortunately because of the absence of wind that day, is is difficult to identify.
