The focus point of this welcome sign is the detailed picture of the Cahaba Lily. The lily is a type of spider lily belonging to the amaryllis family and is noted for its beautiful three-inch-wide white flowers. The lily's scientific name, Hymenocallis coronaria, translates as beautiful crown-like membrane which accurately describes its attributes.
One of largest remaining stands of the lily in the world is at the Hargrove Shoals within the boundaries of the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge near West Blocton in Bibb County. Since May 1990, West Blocton has been home of the annual Cahaba Lily Festival. Activities include presentations on the lily and other local wildflowers, the crowning of the Cahaba Lily Queen, and the opportunity to view the lilies in their best known natural habitat, the shoals of the Cahaba River.
The Cahaba Lily is under consideration for federal protection due to entire populations being wiped out by dam construction.
