Menan was originally called Pooles Island then officially named Cedar Butte which was then changed again to Menan.

townsite surveyed 1883; grist mill 1894;
pioneer merchant, C.A. Smith, Sr. Postoffice
established 1885; changed Cedar Butte name
to Menan, Indian word for island. Francis
M. Bybee, Postmaster.
