Homem do Mar (Sea Man)is a sculpture by the Portuguese artist João Duarte.
The sculpture is an hommage to all those (man and woman) that make their living from the sea. It depicts a man, fisherman, wearing the typical fisherman´s boots holding an oar in one hand and a fishers net on the other. Behind him we can see a boat, and, on the side, a woman. The woman´s role was very important. She help repair the nets and also selling the fish. It was also the woman that took care of th childrens and the house when the man was away at sea.
The monument was made in 1992 by João Duarte.
João Duarte was born in 1952 in Lisbon. He has a degree in Art by Lisbon´s University Fine Art´s School and is a professor at that school. He´s a member of the Sculptors guild (NY-USA) and FIDEM (Medal Federation).
He has participated in several exhibitions of sculpture and medal´s in Portugal and around the world (Spain, USA, Japan, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary, UK, Finland and Switzerland).
