Garrett Coliseum is supported by 22 enormous steel-reinforced A-frames which hold up the concrete slab roof that is up to five inches thick.
The Coliseum was, for many years, the largest enclosed arena in the United States and visitors from around the country would come to Montgomery just to look at it.

Wanda McClusky wrote, in part, in the Montgomery Independent about the March 6, 1974 show, "Governor George C. Wallace may have felt a tinge of jealousy when several thousand shrieking women paid homage to their idol, Elvis Presley. Wallace took his wife Cornelia to see Presley's sell-out concert in Garrett Coliseum and would have gone unnoticed if he had not entered during intermission."
