The Frederick Apartments is a vintage apartment building that was built in 1927 and has remained an apartment building ever since. The mid-rise, three-story building has 36 units in it and has been designated a historic landmark by the National Register of Historic Places, received the Charlotte Historic District Landmark Award, and was named a Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Site. One of the reasons the building received the NRHP designation was because one of its former residents, W.J. Cash, was a famous newspaperman and authored his most famous book "Mind of the South" while living at the Federick Apartments from 1939 - 1940. Cash is specified in the write-up for the NRHP as the famous person associated with the Frederick Apartments. The "Mind of the South" was published in 1941, the same year W.J. Cash died.
The plaque about W.J. Cash is located to the right of the main entrance into the Frederick Apartment building. There are other historic designation markers also mounted on the brick facade on the left side of the door. The W.J. Cash plaque reads:

"Newspaperman W.J. Cash (1901-41) lived here 1939-40 while writing his classic book 'Mind of the South' published by Alfred Knopf, 1941."
