This monument was commissioned by the National Union Mineworkers (NUM) Yorkshire Area - December 1991, and Sculpted by Graham Ibbeson -1992.

The monument was unveiled by Arthur Scargill, president of The National of Mineworkers on Wednesdy 28th July 1993.

Monument is of three bronze figures mounted on a square stone plinth. A woman holding a baby, a man dressed as a miner and a small girl. Inscription on the front face of the plinth reads-
"IN MEMORY OF
THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES
IN SUPPORTING THEIR UNION
IN TIMES OF STRUGGLE"

The monument is sited in the front garden, adjacent to the pavement, of the Barnsley NUM Building, at the Junction of Huddersfield and Victoria Road, barnsley, South Yorkshire, UK.

Prior to 1984 there were many coal mines in the UK and the NUM represented the great numbers of workers in the industry. From 1984 - 1985 the NUM called a strike against pit closures which lasted for a year before being returning to work. During this time some pits in Nottingham left the NUM. After the return to work many pits were closed and at the present only a few are left. Many communities were built on the coal industry and these were also destroyed. The strike also caused some families to break up.

During the strike three children ages 14, 14, and 15 died picking coal. Two men died on picket duty. One killed in an accident, and three died going to or away from picket duty.
